Events: Halloween 2000

Contrary to popular belief in Sweden, Halloween did not originate in the USA. It is an old Celtic custom that was introduced to America by immigrants from Scotland and Ireland.

Another misconception among Swedes is that Halloween should be celebrated on All Saints Day (Alla helgons dag) at the beginning of November. In fact Halloween falls on the 31st October and it is interesting to note that Swedes have now officially moved Halloween celebrations to that date in order to avoid offending those who objected to a pagan celebration coinciding with a Christian festival.

The Caledonian Society last celebrated Halloween on 28th October 2000. A small but enthusiastic group of adults and children gathered in the hall of Petrus Kyrka (church) in Stocksund. Wine, soft drinks and food were abundant and there were prizes for best costumes and for pumpkin and turnip lanterns. Turnip lanterns are traditional to Scotland whereas pumpkin lanterns are an American custom.
